Tiny Viola (the size of a violin)
Model
After making lots of conventionally small violas (between 15 and 16 inches) this is a very small viola, with the length of body, neck and string length of a full size violin. The widths, however, are wider to make it sound like a viola. Initially I built these for youngsters who want the sound and playability of a viola but are not yet big enough to play a more normal viola, but I have sold some to people with greater years who are principally violinists but who also want to continue to play the viola. The shape of the body without any corners helps in freeing up the plates for improved lower frequencies, but it also makes it quicker to build, as does the simplified design of the head which Stradivari used on his dancing master’s kits.
